This piece is a direct result of material exploration. Geode slices, while beautiful, are available in millions of gift shops and souvenir stands throughout the United States. Almost everyone has one, and many jewelers and artisans have used them in their work. I love the depth of this particular geode, however, I knew I had to find a way to transform it. To resolve my quandry, I smashed my geode slice into pieces. The resulting fragment reminded me of some type of rudimentary weapon, such as a shiv (prison slang for a weapon fashioned from found objects). After refining the edges of my geode fragment, I paired it with a simple silver band, facilitating an aesthetic contrast to the jagged edges of the shattered crystal.
